“I think it would be really interesting to interview Kate Middleton
because I think she has comported herself so well since she has been
thrust in the limelight,” says Couric.
But she adds, “I think she needs to eat more because she’s so thin.”
Now she’s making headlines for criticizing the Duchess, but is what she said so terrible?
Dina Gachman at Forbes writes that the comment isn’t a big deal, but the reason it is becoming such is because Kate Middleton’s level celebrity transcends even actresses like Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow, who have also been criticized for being too thin.
“The very reason that people get upset when Middleton comes under any
scrutiny – her royalty – is the same reason her impossibly tiny waist
does kind of matter. She’s a princess. She married a prince in a
fairy tale ceremony that was really only missing the chipper cartoon
birds and little forest animals. Little girls look up to princesses, and
they adore Kate Middleton,” writes Gachman.
“In the end though, Kate Middleton’s diet is really none of our business.
Maybe she’s stressed. Maybe she’s pregnant. Maybe we should spend less
time scrutinizing female bodies so we can accept our own,” Gachman finishes.
Do you agree? Is Couric making headlines because Middleton is too beloved to criticize for anything? Or that we shouldn’t scrutinize female bodies at all?
