British actress Georgia King has done all sorts of things on the other side of the pond, but U.S. audiences are finally getting introduced to her on NBC’s new comedy “The New Normal.” Zap2it has named her one of our Ones to Watch for the 2012-13 season as Goldie, the heart of this post-modern family unit, and we caught up with her to find out what she’s like off screen.
Do you have any current pop culture obsessions/addictions/guilty pleasures?
OK, so I’m new to this wonderful country, so don’t judge me. But when we were filming the pilot, I was so tired one night and was trying to figure out how to work the remote when I stumbled upon THE greatest TV show known to man — “Sweet Genius” on the Food Network. It’s ace! “And your next mandatory ingredient iiiiiiiissssssss!!'” Ugh, love it!
Zombie apocalypse or alien invasion?
Well, I dealt with zombies last year in a British film called “Cockneys vs Zombies.” I perfected killing a zombie with a shovel (grisly), so I kinda feel like I should take aliens down next.
What was the last white lie you told?
That I’m American? So I could be in the running to play Goldie. Biiiiig dream role, liiiittle white lie!
Do you have any strange phobias?
At the moment not so much, but I used to have a phobia of elastic bands. And bridges? Weirdo.
Who is your most recent text message from?
[Co-star] Andrew Rannells. I convinced him I had a bonnet collection and he demanded to know where the bonnet I promised to wear into work was.
Tell us about your first kiss.
A ginger boy named Oli Goff asked me out and I said yes, so he wrote down his home phone number, adding “I love you.” It was a fast-paced relationship. We were 7, I believe. Anyway, the next day we were dared to kiss for 10 seconds in the playground. And I remember us touching lips and just giggling. What a great ten seconds it was.
Is there a celebrity you’ve met who made you feel starstruck? Tell us about it.
Jim Broadbent had me a little lost for words. And he had seen me in “Little Dorrit” and was very complimentary and I just remember trying to “Be cool, be cool” and thinking “Don’t hug him and don’t scream YOU ARE MY HERO.”
What do you have to have in your carry-on bag on the plane?
I take my journal on flights, I always forget to write in it unless I’m on a plane. So every entry begins with: “I’m in seat 36 A (or whatever) and I’m flying to…” That and chewing gum. Gotta stay minty.
What do your friends make fun of you for?
My best friend in England is fascinated by the afro I have when I wake up in the morning. Once, when we were camping she tried to stay awake all night to figure out when and how my afro formed. She still hasn’t figured it out, but she does make fun of me for it!
If you could guest star on one other TV show, what would it be and why?
I got to go and have a look around “American Horror Story” the other day and it was INSANE. AMAZING! I would love to be on that show, it blows my mind.
What food can you not resist?
Almond butter. I’m obsessed with it, which I know is lame. I can’t have it in my home because I eat it straight out the jar. Like a weird, obsessed vampire-type of lady, I just go for it. It’s not pretty.
“The New Normal” airs Tuesday nights at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
