A relative of boxing trainer and commentator, Emmanuel Steward says reports of his death are false. TMZ first reported the boxing legend passed away, which spurred outlets around the country to carry similar stories. Yahoo! Sports and TMZ have since removed the articles in question, while others, like the Detroit Free Press, have issued retractions.
Emmanuel’s sister, Diane Steward-Jones tells Detroit’s ABC affiliate, “You can tell folks that he is alive, and being treated by some of the best experts in the world.”
According to WXYZ, Steward is being treated for an unspecified disease, after recently undergoing surgery for diverticulitis.
Steward-Jones says the man’s family is “dismayed and greatly disheartened and disappointed that during this personally challenging time, people would callously and thoughtlessly run wild with untrue statements.”
