“The Secret Life of the American Teenager” is coming to an end on ABC Family. The high school drama, currently on hiatus in the midst of its fifth season, will not return for Season 6.
According to Deadline, ABC Family felt the show “had run its course.” The stalwart series is no longer the ratings powerhouse it once was, when 4.68 million viewers tuned in for the Season 2 premiere. The show’s recent midseason finale drew just 1.54 million viewers on Aug. 27, and it had dipped as low as 1.06 million two weeks prior. (For the record, that’s still a larger audience than “Gossip Girl” and “90210” drew in their season premieres last night on The CW, but anyway…)
It probably didn’t help that “Secret Life” star Shailene Woodley has basically outgrown the show, having earned critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination for work as George Clooney’s daughter in “The Descendants” and garnering more film offers in the process.
But “Secret Life” fans still have something to look forward to: The final 12 episodes of Season 5 will kick off as scheduled on ABC Family in March.
