The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences went with a surprise choice as host of the 2013 Oscars: “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane.
MacFarlane, who also directed and voiced the title character in this summer’s hit comedy “Ted,” will be taking the Oscar stage for the first time. The Oscars are scheduled for Feb. 24, 2013.
“It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars,” MacFarlane says. “My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen roast.”
Academy Awards producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron say MacFarlane’s performing style “blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh. He will be the consummate host.”
MacFarlane hosted the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live” on Sept. 15, and he’s served as roastmaster for the aforementioned Comedy Central roast of Sheen and that of Donald Trump. The Oscars, needless to say, will be a big step up in terms of scrutiny and the number of people watching.
What do you think of the choice? Do you think MacFarlane will make a good host?
