CBS has picked up a U.S. version of U.K. reality competition sensation “The Great British Bake Off” for an anticipated 2013 premiere.
With the working title of “Bake Off,” the American version will follow its British inspiration and track skilled amateur bakers competing in challenges to determine one ultimate winner.
The Season 3 finale of “British Bake Off” drew 6.54 million viewers Tuesday night in the U.K., helping BBC2 score a rare victory over both BBC One and ITV1. The format has also achieved success in Denmark and Sweden and has been sold to Australia, Ireland, Norway and France.
It’s worth noting that CBS will air the Super Bowl next year, which is always a great launching pad for new series. Football as a lead-in to baking could be a stretch, but it would definitely help get the series a massive sampling. The network previously debuted the still-running reality hit “Undercover Boss” after the big game back in 2010.
