It’s official: Channing Tatum is People’s Sexiest Man Alive this year. And was there ever really any doubt?
This news was People’s worst kept secret, as it was leaked earlier this month that Tatum was going to get the annual honor. He’ll be taking over the prestigious title from last year’s winner, Bradley Cooper. While some last year were upset that Cooper won in 2011 over the arguably more deserving Ryan Gosling, no one should be able to deny Tatum’s right to the title now.
Two words alone should have made Tatum a shoe-in for the Sexiest Man award: “Magic Mike.” Watching Tatum shimmy and shake on the big screen alongside the likes of Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer and Adam Rodriguez while reliving his stripper past was definitely a high point of the year. But Tatum also proved that he doesn’t take himself too seriously in the surprisingly great “21 Jump Street” and yet again was a great male lead in a romantic drama, this time “The Vow.” Three strikes and you’re in.
This news might not come as a shock to the rest of us, but it apparently did take Tatum by surprise. “My first thought was, ‘Y’all are messing with me.’ I told [my wife] Jenna [Dewan-Tatum] after we’d been in the bathtub washing our dogs because they’d gotten skunked,” he tells People. “She was like, ‘What?’ Yeah, she calls me [the Sexiest Man Alive] now.”
For her part, Dewan-Tatum thinks her husband is very deserving of the honor. “People know him to be fun and sexy, but they don’t know how emotionally deep and spiritually open he is,” she says. “He is such an open-hearted person; what you see is what you get.”
