After seeing the devastation that tropical storm Sandy did on the East Coast this week, celebrities canceled their Friday night plans to show up and raise funds on NBC’s Hurricane Sandy Telethon. Hosted by Matt Lauer with help from New York icons Brian Williams, Al Roker, and Jon Stewart, the telethon encouraged fans to donate to the Red Cross relief effort via phone or via iTunes.
Somber clip packages showed the billions of dollars of damage caused by flooding, fires, and high winds — not to mention the people displaced by power outages and total destruction of their homes.
Christina Aguilera opened the show with her mainstay “Beautiful.” The music continued — almost completely acoustic — with New Jersey native Jon Bon Jovi performing “Livin’ On A Prayer” and “Who Says You Can’t Go Home.” Jimmy Fallon sang “Under The Boardwalk” with Steven Tyler, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen. Tyler went on to join Aerosmith for “Dream On” and Joel performed “Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway),” aptly. The show was closed out by Springsteen’s E Street Band, performing “Land of Hope and Dreams.”
Kevin Bacon, Sting, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny DeVito, Tina Fey, Mary J. Blige, and Ann Curry were also in the house to show their support. Click here to make a donation to the Red Cross relief effort!
