tammy baldwin gi First openly gay Senator Tammy Baldwin elected in Wisconsin

After one of the most expensive senate races in the history of
Wisconsin, Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin defeated former
governor Tommy Thompson to become the first openly gay Senator in U.S.
history.
Reuters reports the candidates raised at least $65 million in the
fight to assume the seat of Democrat Herb Kohl, who is retiring after
four terms in the Senate.
Baldwin’s sexual orientation was never a main issue in the
campaign. However, she was criticized by Thompson for her support of
Barack Obama‘s health care plan.
Another openly gay politician, Democrat Mark Pocan, is expected to replace Baldwin in the House.
Baldwin spoke at the Democratic National Convention and campaigned for Obama in the days leading up to the 2012 election.
