Boxing legend Hector “Macho” Camacho has died in San Juan, Puerto Rico at the age of 50.
Camacho was declared brain dead days before his death. The boxing champ suffered a heart attack after receiving a gunshot to the face.
The fighter’s mother, Maria Matias, said earlier she was waiting until Camacho’s brothers arrived before taking him off life support. Us Weekly reports Camacho suffered a second heart attack and his family made the decision to take him off life support Nov. 24, 2012.
Hector was shot on Nov. 20, along with fellow fighter, Adrian Mojica Moreno, who died not long after the shooting. Police in Puerto Rico say an investigation is underway, but no suspects were apprehended.
Camacho, who was a sordid history of run-ins with the law, was previously shot in 2011 in what was reported as an attempted carjacking. At the time of Camacho’s death, a trial was pending in Florida over charges of domestic violence against his teenage son.
Earlier in 2012, Camacho starred on a reality dating show broadcast on YouTube called, “It’s Macho Time.” Women on the show competed to become Hector’s girlfriend.
