The American Music Awards made a big deal out of teasing the “special guest” who would join Korean sensation Psy for the show’s closing performance.
The suspense ended about halfway through “Gangnam Style” when M.C. Hammer took the stage with Psy. He’s a fitting guest, because “Gangnam Style,” with its inescapable catchiness and massively imitated dance moves, is nothing if not the 2012 version of “U Can’t Touch This.”
At 50, Hammer can still bring it, showing off his smooth dance moves as the DJ mashed up “Gangnam Style” with his 1991 hit “2 Legit 2 Quit.” Twenty-plus years, a bankruptcy, a reality show and a regrettable Cash 4 Gold ad after his apex, Hammer seemed genuinely excited to be pumping it up on stage again.
As “surprise” collaborations go, this one worked a lot better than the LMFAO/David Hasselhoff combination at the end of the 2011 AMAs. Plus, no one ended up in smiley-face underwear on stage.
What did you think of MC Hammer’s appearance on the AMAs? Were you excited to see him on stage again?
