Instead of having to wait until the May, 2013 release of the upcoming “Star Trek” movie, Paramount Pictures is planning to release the first 9 minutes of “Star Trek into Darkness” as a preview before some showings of “The Hobbit” starting on December 14.
The preview will be limited to 500 IMAX 3D screens during the December release (according to a report from Deadline.com). Why the limit? The main reason is the film format. Certain scenes in the new “Star Trek” film were shot using IMAX cameras. This filmmaking method allows for super high-resolution imagery and a wider screen-size. For those scenes shot in IMAX, viewers in IMAX-enabled theaters will see the picture expand to fill a wider area of the screen.
This newest “Star Trek” is a sequel to J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 reboot of the classic sci-fi story. The second film was written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, while Abrams again served as director.
