Exciting news, “Star Trek” fans: A plot synopsis for “Star Trek Into Darkness” that was posted on the studio’s official press site gives major clues about who the movie’s top-secret villain is.
The synopsis was picked up by The Film Stage, and you can read it in its entirety here:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
There are a few key words here — “from within their own organization,” “one man weapon of mass destruction” — that seem to imply Benedict Cumberbatch is playing the character Gary Mitchell in the movie. Mitchell only appeared in the original “Star Trek” series episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” and was a good friend of Captain Kirk at Starfleet Academy who later developed powerful telekinetic and telepathic abilities and thought himself a God. Kirk was forced to kill him in the episode after Mitchell became a villain.
Suspicions of Cumberbatch playing Mitchell came to the forefront when “Star Trek” star Karl Urban accidentally let that name slip during an interview with SFX magazine. “[Cumberbatch is] awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary,” Urban said while promoting “Dredd.” However, producer Roberto Orci later denied Urban’s slip, leading many to believe (again) that Cumberbatch was actually playing Khan in the “Star Trek” sequel.
“Star Trek Into Darkness” comes out May 17, 2013.
