“The X Factor” cut their Top 13 down to a Top 12 tonight (sorry, Jason Brock), and Zap2it was in the audience to scope out the action (and witness One Direction mania firsthand). Here are 12 things you didn’t see on TV:
Simon’s late entrance
Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and L.A Reid were hanging out at the judges table for a full five minutes before air time. Lovato also shook hands with and hugged a few audience members, while Spears and Reid chatted. Simon Cowell didn’t walk out and join them until 30 seconds before the cameras started rolling.
Khloe’s mommie dearest
Kris Jenner was in the audience for both last night’s performances and tonight’s results to cheer on her co-host daughter Khloe Kardashian Odom. (In the press room after the show, Khloe said her mom’s big note for her this week was to say “Goodbye, everybody!” in a more upbeat, cheerful way when it’s time to close the show.)
Something had to be done about all those giant red and white balloons that dropped from the ceiling at the end of One Direction’s first performance. The stage crew had a big ol’ balloon popping party during the first commercial break and some of the fans in the pit pitched in to help.
One Direction even impress themselves
When One Direction took the stage for their second performance, all five members kept turning around to watch the video package playing on a giant screen behind them that summed up their rise to fame. Zayn Malik chuckled when the screen flashed the “First U.K. band to have a U.S. #1 debut album” factoid.
MIA at the judges table
Spears and Reid weren’t in their seats after the first commercial break, but the camera crew shot around it and just focused on Kardashian and Mario Lopez standing next to Cowell and Lovato. You can notice who’s missing if you look closely in the wide shot.
Who would Rachel Berry love?
Lopez introduced Lea Michele in the audience during the broadcast, but off air the audience warm-up guy said he heard Michele has “several favorites” in the competition, including Carly Rose Sonenclar.
Demi’s newest friend
During another break, Lovato went over to talk to Michele and wound up spending most of the break chatting. Later in the press room, Lovato said she’s planning to hang out with the “Glee” star soon: “I never hang out with other celebrities, but she’s a sweetheart.”
Waiting for the results
While the contestants were waiting to find out the second group to automatically advance to the Top 12, Sonenclar and fellow 13-year-old Beatrice Miller were bouncing around on stage and having fun. Jason Brock was waving and blowing kisses to the crowd. But CeCe Frey (who was on stage all by herself) looked terrified.
After learning all of his groups made the Top 12, Cowell fist pumped on his way back to the judges table and high-fived Spears when he got there.
Simon and Demi: No feud here
They may have had some tense exchanges during the performance show, but during the commercial break after Frey’s last chance performance, Cowell and Lovato were engaged in a deep conversation. Even after the cameras started rolling, Lovato continued by writing notes to Cowell on a sheet of paper during the intro for Brock’s performance.
Justin Bieber’s cameo
One Direction easily earned the loudest screams of the night, but Emblem3 weren’t far behind (even though they placed a surprising 6th in the overall voting). In third place for loudest reaction: the split second flash of Justin Bieber from the judges homes episodes during the “Goodbye Jason Brock” video package.
After Brock was eliminated and all the contestants came back on stage to learn how they placed, Frey was still sobbing over learning she was safe. Fellow young adults teammate Jennel Garcia grabbed her in a tight embrace, and Paige Thomas gave her a supportive hug as well.
