Rising star Tom Hardy has signed to star in a movie based on hit video game franchise “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.”
It’s the second consecutive casting coup for gaming company Ubisoft, which recently set another breakthrough actor from the U.K. — Michael Fassbender — to star in an adaptation of “Assassin’s Creed.”
Hollywood doesn’t have a very good track record with turning video games into movies, but Ubisoft is clearly making an effort to change that. While neither “Splinter” nor “Assassin’s” has a director attached yet, having acclaimed actors involved in the early stages should help attract top talent.
According to Variety, Hardy — whose credits include blockbusters “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Inception” — will play “Splinter” hero Sam Fisher, a covert operative working within a sub-division of the NSA.
