Sites and blogs participating in the moment of silence will cease activity for one minute, beginning at 9:30am EST. Causes.com offers a badge that web pages can display to show their support for the movement.
Full Java-script coding to show the badge over a darkened site can be found at webmomentofsilence.org.
Supporters of the moment of silence on Twitter are urged to post the hashtag #momentforSandyHook at some time before 9:30am. In addition to honoring the victims, the expressed purpose of the Internet silence is a commitment to reduce future gun violence.
Causes.com’s site has a posted goal of 200,000 pledged participants, a count that reached over 150,000 by late Thursday night (December 20). This “Web Goes Silent” campaign is being spearheaded by Silicon Valley businessman Ron Conway, with support from celebrities including Ryan Seacrest, Suze Orman and Britney Spears.
