Oprah Winfrey has made the second selection for the post-daytime talk show version of Oprah’s Book Club. Prepare to hear a whole lot about author Ayana Mathis and her novel “The Twelve Tribes of Hattie.”
The book goes on sale Thursday (Dec. 6) and will do so with a big push from Winfrey, who is effusive in her praise for Mathis’ debut novel. “The opening pages of Ayana’s debut took my breath away,” she says. “I can’t remember when I read anything that moved me in quite this way, besides the work of Toni Morrison.”
“The Twelve Tribes of Hattie” tells the story of the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to other parts of the country in the first half of the 20th century through the eyes of Hattie Shepherd and the children she raises after moving from Georgia to Philadelphia in the 1920s.
In addition to hard copies of the book, readers can also buy an Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 digital edition that includes a reader’s guide and notes from Winfrey on her favorite passages.
