Martin Freeman‘s Bilbo Baggins doesn’t seem to know quite what he’s in for in the first image of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” He can be seen lying on a pile of treasure in the den of Smaug, gazing up in shock and awe at what can only be “The Hobbit’s” dragon.
The image comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, and fans of “The Hobbit” novel will know that Bilbo’s story doesn’t end when he meets Smaug. There is the entire Battle of Five Armies to see, and that story will take up a good portion of “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.” In fact, the introduction of Smaug seems like it will take place towards the middle of the series.
“The dragon is a huge, wonderful, amazing part of the story, but it doesn’t end there,” screenwriter and producer Philippa Boyens teases to EW. “Everyone can suspect there’s a rather large battle in film three.”
Though Smaug isn’t revealed in this image, fans can catch a sneak peek at the dragon in this “Hobbit” TV spot. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” comes out on Dec. 14, while “The Desolation of Smaug” debuts on Dec. 13, 2013 and “There and Back Again” hits theaters on July 18, 2014.
