Her “I Knew You Were Trouble” video is definitely new territory for country darling Taylor Swift. Ditching both the down-home twang and the sparkly dresses, “I Knew You Were Trouble” tells the tale of a dangerous, reckless love affair.
Somehow, we don’t think this song about Jake Gyllenhaal and his innocent scarf and maple lattes.
In the beginning of the video, Taylor — rocking a short pink hairstyle — wakes up alone in an abandoned concert festival campground. In voiceover, she says, “I think… I think when it’s all over, I knew his world moved too fast, and burned too bright. But I just thought, how can the devil be pulling you toward someone who looks so much like an angel when he smiles at you. Maybe he knew that, when he saw me. I guess I just lost my balance. I think that the worst part of it all wasn’t losing him. It was losing me.”
Reeve Carney, who recently broke up with Taylor’s BFF Ashley Greene, stars as the destructive love interest, who woos Taylor with milkshakes at the diner, “LOVE” tattoos, and daredevil drives on California freeways. By the time the relationship devolves into barfights, crying in dirty motel rooms, and sweaty cheating, Taylor is in way over her head.
It’s Taylor’s most adult video yet, though still has a certain appeal to the teen angst crowd. The release coincided with Taylor’s 23rd birthday; oddly appropriate, since it’s also her 23rd video.
“I think that this video is my favorite right now,” she tells MTV. “Just because I’ve never had a video that’s so action packed, where it’s like ‘Oh my god, they’re fighting, now they’re in a hotel room, now he’s getting a tattoo, now there’s a rave, and then there’s a concert, and then he’s kissing another girl!'”
She’s also a big fan of her co-star. “The actor who played the guy in the video, Reeve Carney, is like one of the most amazing, talented people I’ve gotten to be around,” she gushes. “He plays Spiderman on Broadway, and he’s in a great band called Carney, so I immediately thought of him for the video, and he just killed it.”
