After “Girls” won a Golden Globe on Sunday night for Best TV Comedy/Musical, showrunner/writer/director/star/etc Lena Dunham gave a delighted speech after being “elected” to speak for her cast and crew.
“It took a village to raise this very demented child,” she joked, and then added, “I also promised myself that if I ever got this chance I would thank Chad Lowe. I promised my mother.”
Pop culture junkies will remember that when Hillary Swank won an Oscar in 2000 for “Boys Don’t Cry,” she was married to Chad Lowe — and she forgot to thank him in her acceptance speech. When asked why she thanked Lowe, Dunham simply said, “Because Hillary Swank forgot, and I’m an a**hole.”
Lowe was expecting the love. Last summer, Dunham tweeted that she’d forgotten to thank a writer in a New Yorker interview — “just like when Hillary Swank neglected to mention Chad Lowe at the Oscars! So wrong.” Lowe saw the tweet and said he hoped that one day she’d write material for him — and she responded, saying he’d made her day and that she’d thank him if she ever won an award.
He remembered the exchange, because earlier in the night, after Dunham won an award for Best Actress in TV Comedy/Musical, “Congrats to @lenadunham on your Golden Globe win. But, seriously? You forget to thank me?! After all we’ve been through? I’m shocked.”
After she did thank him, he called her “darling” and said — in all caps — “YOU COMPLETE ME.”
