Here is what we know: We can always, always count on Kevin Williamson to give good serial killer, whether it’s Billy Loomis in a mask or Damon Salvatore on a blood binge. This year, he brings us “The Following,” a harrowing thriller starring James Purefoy as a serial-killer-slash-cult-leader and Kevin Bacon as the man hunting him.
Bacon wouldn’t make the move to television for just any role. His character, former FBI agent Ryan Hardy, is as damaged as he is compelling. His single-minded obsession with ending Joe Carroll’s (Purefoy) reign of terror began a decade ago, when Carroll first began slaughtering college students, driven by Edgar Allen Poe’s assertion that death and beauty go hand in hand. Carroll, a literature professor, taught his students that according to Poe, to bereave beauty is to elevate one’s soul.
“The Following” begins after Carroll has already been convicted, thanks to Hardy’s work, and is on death row, awaiting his execution. In the opening sequence, he escapes prison, and Hardy’s nightmare begins again.
FOX has put together a pretty epic viral campaign for the show, the most exciting part of which is the YouTube account IamforeverNEVERMORE, which has been set up as the account of one of Carroll’s followers — a pack of serial killer groupies who have been seduced by his charms. The YouTube channel includes clips from a TV documentary, “60 Minutes” style, about The Winslow Murders Carroll committed. There’s also this alarming home video and this somehow even more disturbing one.
If you want to be even more involved in this unnerving world, FOX has created an interactive experience to allow fans in major cities to get photos of themselves as either a colleague of Hardy’s or a follower of Carroll’s. (Think about this one carefully, guys.) Full details are below.

WHAT: FOX is promoting the thrilling and chilling series premiere of THE FOLLOWING by dropping 10 mysterious photo booths in high-traffic locations across the country. Curious fans will step into branded booths to take photos and will be able to add one of four custom overlays themed to the show such as having Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) seated next to them, see Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) sneaking up behind them or have Poe-esque writing (like the key art) written all over their faces. For those who are unable to visit the booths, the same photo-altering app will be available on Facebook for fans to experience THE FOLLOWING.
