There’s some delicious dish on “Downton Abbey” Season 4 coming out of the U.K., but it’s based on having seen the entire Season 3, so don’t keep reading if you don’t want to be spoiled on the end of the season.
You’ve been warned.
So, as some of you know, Matthew Crawley meets a tragic end in the Season 3 finale when he is driving home from the hospital, on top of the world after the birth of his son, and is struck by another car and dies. It is because actor Dan Stevens wanted to leave the show, not because creators just decided to completely emotionally devastate the fans twice in one season.
What is to become of Lady Mary in Season 4? We’ve seen some fans tweeting about hooking her up with Branson, which — no. Just no.
Thankfully, it sounds like that’s not in the cards. The Daily Mail is reporting that the show, which starts shooting Season 4 in just a couple weeks, is auditioning “posh and pretty” actors to play Lady Mary’s new love interest.
A source close to production tells the paper that no one has made the grade yet.
“Some were too dark, some too blond, some too bland, though a couple have been put on a shortlist that the producers and creative people will discuss,” says the source.
Gareth Neame, the executive producer for NBC-Universal International, says that this will be a predominant storyline of Season 4.
“Mary’s a catch, and her story will be the spine of the next series,” says Neame.
The paper also says that if this new suitor “gels,” he’ll continue on the show. But if he doesn’t, the plot will introduce other possible love interests — perhaps even an American love interest.
“Downton Abbey” airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on PBS.
