Tony nominated “Newsies” star and current “Smash” co-star Jeremy Jordan will play the male lead opposite Anna Kendrick in the feature film version of Jason Robert Brown’s cult favorite musical “The Last 5 Years.”
Deadline has the news of Jordan joining the film, which will be written and directed by Richard LaGravenese (“Beautiful Creatures”) and reportedly stay true to the show’s unconventional structure. The musical tells the story of young artistic couple Jamie and Cathy’s doomed relationship from two points of view: her side of the story begins with their break-up and flashes backwards, while his story begins with their meeting and moves forward.
On stage it’s just the two characters and the story is told entirely through song. That could make for a tricky translation to the big screen but LaGravenese has already made two great choices in the casting.
Given the sorry ratings “Smash” has been posting in its second season, it could turn out that this project is the real breakthrough rising talent Jordan deserves.
