From Taylor Swift to Jessica Biel to Lea Michele, every actress in Hollywood wanted a piece of “Les Miserables” when the casting process started. Scarlett Johansson tried out for Fantine, a role that garnered an Oscar nomination for Anne Hathaway.
“I sang my little heart out,” Johansson tells Broadway Buzz. “The jazz hands kid inside me was just over the moon. And I auditioned with laryngitis.”
Scarlett says she did everything she could to fight sickness before the audition, but after seeing Anne’s performance, she knows the role went to its rightful owner. “There’s no possible way I ever could have topped that performance,” says Johansson of Hathaway. “It was perfect and, I think, fateful and meant to be.”
Hathaway has already taken home numerous honors for her portrayal of Victor Hugo‘s character, including a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a BAFTA Award. We’ll learn Sunday if she also wins the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
