Sometimes humor can be taken too far, as seems to be the case with satire news website, “The Onion,” which officially crossed the line during the Academy Awards telecast.
“The Onion” found itself the target of an “unfollow” trend on Twitter after posting a tweet — that was later removed — referring to nine-year-old Quvenzhan Wallis by a vulgar name.
The remark, which was screencapped by Buzzfeed (and Zap2it has chosen not to re-post) read, “Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhan Wallis is kind of a c***, right?” (The tweeted version was not censored.)
Quvenzhan, the youngest-ever Academy Awards Best Actress nominee, who carries puppy purses on the red carpet, has been enjoying her moment in the spotlight following her acting debut.
After winning the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Young Actor, she participated with First Lady Michelle Obama in a workshop for students based on her Oscar-nominated and critically acclaimed film, “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” On top of that, Wallis was just cast in the lead role for the movie musical remake, “Annie.”
Is anyone else wondering what the writer of that Onion tweet has accomplished lately — aside from irking a whole lot of social media fans? As Academy Awards host Seth MacFarlane so aptly pointed out to “Little Q” in his closing musical number, “You’ll be at the future Oscars when the rest of us are dead.”
