“Community” fans anticipating the show’s return showed up in greater numbers than usual Thursday, as the Season 4 premiere had better ratings than last year’s debut and finale, despite airing opposite “The Big Bang Theory” and “American Idol.”

“Big Bang” was once again very big, trouncing “Idol” in their common half-hour and leading CBS to an across-the-board win. “Community’s” premiere also helped “Parks and Recreation” score a season high among adults 18-49, though the news wasn’t all good for NBC — “Do No Harm” fell from its historically low premiere, delivering dismal ratings at 10 p.m.

Elsewhere, “Scandal” tied its series high in adults 18-49, but CBS’ “Elementary” didn’t get much of a Super Bowl bump, rising only a tenth of a point over last week in the demo.

CBS brought in 14.2 million viewers and an 8.8 rating/14 share among households in primetime, finishing well ahead of second-place FOX (9.6 million, 5.7/9). ABC (7.2 million, 4.9/8) came in third. NBC was fourth with 3.2 million viewers and a 2.0/3, and The CW trialed with just over 2 million viewers and a 1.3/2.

CBS also led the adults 18-49 demographic with a 3.5 rating, topping FOX’s 2.1. ABC was third with a 2.4. NBC drew a 1.4 and The CW a 0.8.
