It was looking like the first upset of the 2013 NCAA men’s basketball tournament, with No. 14-seed Davidson having a lead as big as nine points over No. 3-seed Marquette.
With roughly 3:40 left to play, the Wildcats had a seven-point lead on the favorites, but the Golden Eagles battled back, coming to within two points with under 30 seconds to play, then within one point with 10 seconds to go. It was looking like foul time for Marquette, but Davidson threw the ball away, giving Marquette the ball back with 6.7 seconds left.
Vander Blue blew by the Davidson defenders to put in a layup with one second on the clock and that was all she wrote for the Wildcats. Part of the problem for Davidson was free throws — they only shot .636 as a team, which isn’t going to get it done against a team like Marquette.
Alas, the NCAA fans will have to keep waiting a little longer for some madness, as the tournament has gone chalk so far. For a schedule of the games, check out the NCAA TV listings.
