Torrey DeVitto: I’m seeing both sides, since I’m playing an Army wife but also someone who has been in the service herself. All the producers are amazing at accessing all the research that we as actors want and need.
I did boot camp with the guys, just to have the background of knowing what my character went through by experiencing it firsthand. [Military officers] just have to be so mentally on-point and not fall apart when things start going crazy.
Zap2it: How was boot camp for you?
Torrey DeVitto: It was awesome. I loved it. We did some crazy physical training, and it kicked my a**! I’m still sore from it. In Airborne training, it’s the same physical test for men and women, so I was there with four or five male castmates.
As a woman in a male-dominated field, you want to be looked at on the same level, so you try hard to keep up, and it can be very frustrating at times. You don’t want them to offer help, even though they’re trying to be nice.
Zap2it: You also recur on “The Vampire Diaries” — which stars your husband, Paul Wesley — and “Pretty Little Liars.” What do you get the most feedback from now?
Torrey DeVitto: The most response I still get is from “One Tree Hill” and [playing] crazy nanny Carrie. I had no idea when I signed on for that show that it had such an insane fan base. It’s so great.
