NBC’s upcoming pirate series “Crossbones” has cast John Malkovich in the lead role of Blackbeard.
The series, a sort of high-seas version of “Deadwood,” comes from “Luther” creator Neil Cross. It centers on Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, and his stronghold on New Providence in the Bahamas, circa 1715. The island is the first working democracy in the Americas, but it’s also a more or less lawless place built on interfering with colonial trade routes.
The powers that be send an assassin named Tom Lowe to take out Blackbeard, but he soon finds himself identifying with his target.
Malkovich has done several TV movies and miniseries in his career — he has three Emmy nominations and one win for a 1985 adaptation of “Death of a Salesman” — but “Crossbones” will be his first regular series role. His recent movie credits include “Warm Bodies,” “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and “Red.”
There’s no word yet on a premiere date for the show, which was ordered straight to series.
