WBC Welterweight champion Robert Guerrero was arrested Thursday at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, as he tried to take a gun onto his flight, the LA Times reports.
Police say Guerrero attempted to check baggage that included an unloaded .40-caliber handgun, along with three unloaded magazines. Though the gun was registered in California, it’s illegal to carry a weapon in New York, if it’s not licensed in the state.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown hammered that point home in a statement, saying, “I hope that Mr. Guerrero fights better than he thinks.” Brown continues, “For anyone who hasn’t gotten the message, let me be crystal clear: You cannot bring an unlicensed weapon — loaded or unloaded — into this county or this city. And if you do, you will be arrested and face felony charges.”
Guerero was arraigned Thursday, with his next court appearance is set for May 14. He was in town promoting a May 4 fight with the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr.
