Luke Bryan took home Entertainer of the Year, one of two fan-voted prizes at the 48th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. Luke proved throughout the night Sunday (April 7) he’s more than just a budding country music star by showcasing his comedy chops alongside co-host Blake Shelton.
Bryan actually broke down in tears when his name was called for the category whose nominees included Shelton, Taylor Swift, and the night’s other big winner, Miranda Lambert.
“I don’t know what to say, guys,” Bryan says, choking back tears. “Thank you guys so much — fans, for doing this to me; thank you so much for making my life what it is. What I always wanted to be was just a country singer that got to ride on a tour bus, and show up on a new stage and play music every night.”
Bryan peppers a few “thank you, baby” and “I love you, baby” shout outs to his wife, Carolyn Boyer Bryan, throughout his emotional acceptance speech. Then he goes on to thank “everybody that I’ve opened up for,” some of whom, like Tim McGraw, were on the ACM stage. “I just started headlining,” Bryan points out with a hint of incredulity.
“I swear to God, every time I step on stage it is a blessing for me,” he says. “This is the defining moment of my life and it means the world to me. I will never take it for granted.” After recovering a bit from the apparent shock of his win, Bryan throws in, “Thank you for letting me host too.”
Shelton, ever the comic relief brings a bit of brevity to the emotional moment on stage. “Congratulations, buddy,” he says to Bryan. “You won Entertainer of the Year in your first and last year of co-hosting the ACM Awards.”
