Lionsgate trotted out its big guns, including fall sequel “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and summer hopeful “Ender’s Game,” to wrap up the week’s events at the annual CinemaCon event in Las Vegas.
Designed to give studios a chance to showcase their hottest upcoming product for movie theater owners, the week has been packed with big reveals including new trailers for “Man of Steel” and “Star Trek Into Darkness” and full screenings of films including “Monsters University” and “Pain & Gain.”
But even though Lionsgate isn’t technically a “major” studio, they still reportedly wowed the crowd with sneak peeks at big titles like “Fire” and “Game” plus action-comedy sequel “Red 2,” Joss Whedon’s Shakespeare project “Much Ado About Nothing” and the early summer caper film “Now You See Me.”
Lionsgate also plugged Summit’s latest young adult novel adaptation “Divergent,” which recently started production and the studio hopes has “Hunger Games”-sized potential.
The event marked the big screen debut for the “Catching Fire” trailer — introduced by co-stars Elizabeth Banks and Liam Hemsworth. The trailer premiered during this past weekend’s MTV Movie Awards and hits theaters nationwide with the release of “Iron Man 3” on May 3.
The “Ender’s Game” trailer launches with “Star Trek Into Darkness” on May 17. The long-awaited adaptation of an ’80s sci-fi novel about a military school in space stars Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, Ben Kingsley and Abigail Breslin along with Harrison Ford, who introduced the trailer at CinemaCon and promised the movie is a very “emotional” experience.
