After “Da Vinci’s Demons” premiered to solid ratings Friday night on Starz, the network has already made a Season 2 renewal.
Production on Season 2 begins next month in Wales and Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2014. The action/historical drama hybrid stars Tom Riley as legendary artist Leonardo Da Vinci and follows the passionate 25-year-old as he battles his own inner demons and the cutthroat world of Italian politics in Renaissance Florence.
The series premiere episode drew 1.04 million viewers in its first airing after the series finale of “Spartacus” and cumed 2.14 million over its first weekend on Starz. That represents the most-watched series debut in the network’s history, topping previous record holder “Camelot” which never made it to Season 2.
“‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ serves up action, adventure and history in a unique and highly entertaining way that only someone like David S. Goyer can,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement. “The first season premiered to strong audience engagement and we are excited to bring the next chapter of Leonardo da Vinci’s adventures to audiences around the world.”
“I’m excited that we get to continue the adventures of the world’s most eccentric and glorious polymath,” Goyer added. “Long live Leonardo and thanks to Starz for helping to make it happen.”
