Rumors about the sexuality of reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee lit up Spanish-language media Wednesday, after a photo surfaced of a man, who looks like the rapper, kissing another man. A statement attributed to Yankee was released that read, “I am a human being like any other, with virtues and defects, and I don’t believe that this is a defect,” while also asking for his and his family’s privacy to be respected.
However, the LA Times reports that statement did not have come from Yankee. The offices of Nevarez Communications and Perfect Partners, who call themselves the rapper’s publicist, says he didn’t release the statement, and never acknowledged he was gay.
Instead, they claim the quotes in the statement were created by an online media outlet. “Online blogs and social media are once again to blame for the spread of false news reports, which other media outlets have also shared regarding a public figure,” says Mayna Nevarez, president of Nevarez Communications.
Yankee vaguely addressed the situation himself on Twitter, writing in Spanish that he has been defamed and thousands of lies will continue to be made about him, but there is only one truth.
