The upcoming reimagining of musical classic “Annie” is landing more Oscar-caliber talent as Jamie Foxx reportedly nears a deal to play the Daddy Warbucks-inspired character Benjamin Stacks.
Foxx would join “Beasts of the Southern Wild” star Quvenzhane Wallis in the remake directed by Will Gluck (“Easy A”) and produced by a team including Will Smith, Jay-Z and Jada Pinkett-Smith. The Hollywood Reporter says Foxx has an offer and his team is in negotiations.
Foxx — who won an Oscar in 2005 for musical bio-pic “Ray” — has enjoyed something of a career revival of late, starring in Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-nominated hit “Django Unchained,” headlining the upcoming summer action movie “White House Down” with Channing Tatum, and landing the lead villain role in comic book sequel “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
At one point it seemed as though Smith would star opposite daughter Willow in “Annie” remake, but production delays changed that plan. News broke on Oscar morning that Wallis had landed the title role. Now the project needs to find its Miss Hannigan.
“Annie” is due for release Dec. 25, 2014.
