Justin Bieber left some people upset after his recent visit to the Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam. The pop star spent almost an hour touring the house before leaving a message in the museum’s guest book.
“Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl,” Bieber wrote. “Hopefully she would have been a belieber.”
Yes, really. Some fans have been outraged by the comment, feeling like Bieber was being self-serving with his sentiment and that he missed the point of the visit entirely. But according to an Us Weekly source, Bieber didn’t mean to strike any nerves.
“He wasn’t trying to be offensive at all,” the insider says. “He was really moved by the experience had always wanted to visit. He found it incredibly moving.”
Meanwhile BBC correspondent Anna Holligan spoke with a representative for the Anne Frank House who confirmed Bieber’s presence at the museum and the comments he wrote in the “special guestbook.”
“He’s 19, it’s a strange life he’s living, it wasn’t very sensible but he didn’t mean bad,” she reports that the representative told her. “He was very interested in Anne Frank.”
