It was a game for the ages — just when you thought Louisville had it in the bag, Michigan eked its way back in. But it wasn’t enough, as the Louisville Cardinals won the 2013 National Championship game. It is the third NCAA championship title for the school.
The first half was dominated by Michigan, and more specifically, unlikely hero Spike Albrecht. But the Wolverines let a 12-point lead dwindle to one by the half and the second 20 minutes was an absolute dogfight.
It was close with 10 minutes left, but Louisville slowly pulled away — aided by a game-changing block by Michigan’s Trey Burke that was called a foul — and that was all she wrote. Louisville only had a four-point lead with 14 seconds to play, but the Cardinals made their free throws down the stretch to put it away.
Louisville’s title win comes on the heels of Kevin Ware‘s horrific leg injury in the Elite Eight game against Duke and on the same day as coach Rick Pitino‘s induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
