President Barack Obama‘s 2013 White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech was definitely a high point of the April 27 event. From joking that he’s not the “strapping young Muslim Socialist I used to be” to asking Michael Douglas for advice on how to be president, the tongue-in-cheek and self-aware speech was one meant for its comedy.
But there were two jokes in particular that people seem to have really responded to. While Obama slams many different news outlets like MSNBC and FOX News, it was his takedown of CNN — which recently made an embarrassing mistake during its Boston Marathon bombings coverage — that really seemed to resonate with people.
“I know CNN has taken some knocks lately but the fact is, I admire their commitment to covering all sides of the story, just in case one of them happens to be accurate,” Obama quips.
Another fan-favorite is when Obama claims he’s taken cue from his wife Michelle Obama and has used one of her “tricks” to get a “burst of new energy” in his second term: He got bangs. The White House Photoshop department apparently worked hard for this event, because two images of Obama sporting bangs then arrive on the screen behind the President.
“I recognize that this job can take a toll on you. I understand that second term you need a burst of new energy and try some new things,” Obama says. “My team and I talked about it and we’re willing to try anything, so we borrowed one of Michelle’s tricks.”
Speaking of Photoshop, our personal favorite moment of the speech came when Obama brings up the allegedly altered photo of him skeet shooting at Camp David. “Quite a number of people insisted that this had been Photoshopped,” he says. “You were right. Can we show them the actual photo? We were just trying to tone it down a little bit.” Cue this beauty being shown on the screen. Amazing.
