Reese Witherspoon and her agent husband James Toth were arrested Friday morning in Atlanta, according to an exclusive report from Variety. Toth was arrested for driving while intoxicated after swerving into the wrong lane (and blowing a .139 on a Breathalyzer test).
Witherspoon, who was a passenger in the car, was arrested for disorderly conduct due to her behavior at the scene. The arresting officer warned her to stay in the car, but according to the police report, she was agitated. “Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did
not believe that I was a real police officer. I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet,” reads the report.
After Toth was arrested, Witherspoon got out of her car, insisting that she was an American citizen and could stand where she wanted.
“Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I
don’t need to know your name.’ I then added, ‘right now’ Mrs.
Witherspoon stated, ‘You’re about to find out who I am.’
… Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, ‘You are
going to be on national news.’ I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was
fine,” reads the report.
Both Witherspoon and Toth were briefly detained before being released at 3:30 a.m. The couple was in Atlanta because Witherspoon is shooting the film, “The Good Lie” there with Philippe Falardeau.
