Never heard of Spike Albrecht? If you don’t go to the University of Michigan, then no, you probably haven’t. Not before the 2013 NCAA National Championship game.
But as the underdog Michigan Wolverines take on the favorite Louisville Cardinals, Albrecht has emerged as a complete MVP of the first half. He has 17 of Michigan’s 38 total points. He’s shooting 6-7 from the field, 4-4 from three-point range.
Up until Monday night, Albrecht averaged 1.8 points per game. His career-high in a single game was seven. He has played less than 300 minutes total the entire season. Now he’s the talk of Twitter.
Here are some of our favorites:
“I think Spike Albrecht was bitten by a radioactive spider today” — Eric Stangel
“Does any sports book even have odds on Spike Albrecht being championship game MVP?” — Darren Rovell
“It’s like I’ve always said: Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Spike Albrecht.” — Tom Fornelli
“Spike Albrecht just took your daughter to prom in a Winnebago.” — Josh Zerkle
“Spike Albrecht has half of Michigan’s points. Exactly as expected…” — Andrew Bucholtz
“Forget Steve Holt. I’m throwing my fists on the air and yelling, ‘SPIKE ALBRECHT!'” — Jeff Selph
“Unlike “How I Met Your Mother,” Spike Albrecht delivers! #CBSMonday” — Daniel Fienberg
Can he keep it up in the second half? Michigan better hope so, since its lead has dwindled from 12 points to one.
