Target found itself under a bit of scrutiny after a savvy online shopper discovered that a dress labeled “dark heather gray” in smaller sizes was labeled “manatee gray” in plus sizes.
Susan Clemens tweeted the above picture along with, “What the. Plus sized women get “Manatee Grey” while standard sizes are “Dark Heather Grey.” @Target #notbuyingit.”
The superstore quickly responded on Twitter, writing, “@suZen We apologize for this unintentional oversight & never intend to offend our guests. We’ve heard you, and we’re working to fix it ASAP.”
A Target spokeswoman tells “Today” the incident was an “unintended oversight.”
“We never want to offend any of our guests. We apologize for any discomfort that we may have caused,” the spokeswoman says. “We are in the process of fixing the discrepancy and updating Target.com
so the gray dress will be available in all styles. We’re
working on updating our systems right now.”
Clemens has followed up her initial tweet with an explanation that she wasn’t expressing outrage, just asking Target what was up. “This whole #manatee thing touched cultural pain points – it’s not about @Target – it’s about how people feel about how they’re discussed,” writes Clemens.
