Country music legend Willie Nelson has announced that proceeds from his annual “birthday bash” concert will go to the volunteer fire department in West, Tex., following an explosion at a fertilizer plan in the town on Wednesday (April 17).
At least 14 people were killed in the blast, which wounded 200 others and destroyed 50 homes. At this time, 60 people remain unaccounted for. The cause of the blast, and whether or not it was a criminal act, remains to be seen. However, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Jason Reyes says, “This is still being treated as a crime scene.”
Nelson holds a concert every year in Texas to celebrate his birthday. This year’s a big one, with Willie turning 80 years old on April 30. The Willie Nelson Birthday Bash takes place April 28 at The Backyard in Austin, Tex. Nelson also gives information on other ways to help on his website.
