Sure, this is a rather early announcement, but it sometimes takes a long time to get ready for the craziness of these events.
This scheduling indicates that MTV is satisfied with this year’s push of the Movie Awards to April. The late airdate means that the show serve as a jumping-off point for the summer movie season — special sneak peeks aired during commercials, and actors were on hand to promote their summer projects. With this later airing, MTV also managed to distinguish itself from the vast and ever-increasing number of shows making up the standard “award season” at the beginning of the year.
There’s a big move coming for the 2013 VMAs as well: The show is relocating across the country, leaving Los Angeles for New York City. For the first time ever, the VMAs will broadcast from Brooklyn on Sunday, August 25.
The hipsters are probably very excited (or, being hipsters, totally indifferent) about this.
