Gold medalist Andrew “Bart” Simpson is dead after the 72-foot-long Swedish sailboat he was on capsized in San Francisco Bay. He had been practicing for the upcoming America’s Cup races with the Swedish team Artemis Racing, according to authorities.
Simpson was reportedly trapped under the boat for 10 minutes. He was 36-years-old. Another sailor who was involved in the incident was injured. The rest of the 13 people on the crew were fine.
During his career, the Brit won one Olympic gold medal and one silver medal. He was acting as a strategist for Artemis Racing. “The entire Artemis team is devastated by what happened,” CEO Paul Canyard says in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.”
This isn’t the first time an incident like this happened in San Francisco Bay. Back in November, Larry Ellison‘s new 72-foot America’s Cup boat also capsized.
The America’s Cup is scheduled to run from July 4 to Sept. 7.
