Welcome to the “Arrested Development” Rewatch. Leading up to the release of Season 4, Zap2it
will be taking a look back at the 53 episodes that made the show one of our
most beloved TV comedies. We continue with episode 1 of Season 3, “The Cabin Show,” which first aired Dec. 5, 2005. Watch the first three seasons of “Arrested Development” on Netflix.
Michael decides to marry Rita (Charlize Theron) over the objections of his family and her uncle (Dave Thomas), but once George Sr. and Lucille discover Rita is a heiress worth millions, they’re suddenly supportive of the relationship. Meanwhile, George Michael discovers the truth about Rita and Gob thinks Michael wants him to be best man at the wedding.
Notable guest stars: Besides Theron and Thomas finishing up their arcs, there’s also the return of Bob Einstein as Larry Middleman.
Milestones: The title of the episode — “The Ocean Walker” — becomes the title of a movie Maeby is developing, which (of course) gets referenced again before the season ends.
Huge mistakes: When Michael realizes the truth about Rita after seeing George Michael’s video tape of her trying to eat plastic fruit, he says “I’ve made a huge mistake.”
Most sexual tension: Michael spends most of the episode trying to consummate his relationship with Rita, who doesn’t quite catch on to what he means by a “sleepover.”
Allusions to Tobias being gay: Tobias says British people call tourists “poofters” and tells Michael he’s trying to record the “nuptials” when he has a camera pointed at Michael’s crotch.
Best narrator commentary: “That’s when Michael finally accepted that Rita wasn’t coming. And that local calls were $2.99 a minute. That’s where they get you.”
Next on “Arrested Development”: “Michael re-lives a wedding nightmare.” [Gob’s wedding-related lighter fluid mishap victimizes Tobias this time instead of Michael’s wife.]
