The Cannes Film Festival only kicked off on May 15, but there’s already been a major robbery at the esteemed event. Thieves reportedly broke into a Chopard employee’s Novotel Hotel room and stole ripped the safe containing the company’s jewelry for the event right out of the room’s wall. The safe contained about $1 million in jewels meant to be lent to celebrities at Cannes. Chopard is one of the Cannes Film Festival’s official sponsors.
As USA Today points out, this isn’t the first time a theft of this scale has taken place at Cannes. In 2009, an armed man stole $8 million from a Chopard jewelry store located in the city. That same year, a group of gunmen stole $21 million of jewelry from a Paris Cartier store.
It’s somewhat fitting that the theft took place the same day that Sophia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring” made its opening night premiere. That movie tells the story of a group of teenagers who robbed millions of dollars worth of clothing and jewelry from various Hollywood Hills celebrities from 2008 to 2009.
