A couple pieces of big news out of PBS Tuesday morning (May 14). “Downton Abbey,” the U.K. period drama about the aristocratic Crawley family and their staff, has received a Season 4 premiere date — Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014. The season will air Sunday nights for eight weeks, ending Feb. 23.
In addition to “Downton’s” premiere, PBS has also revealed a new U.K. drama series coming to the channel in 2013. “Last Tango in Halifax” will premiere Sunday, Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, leading into the finale of “Masterpiece Mystery!” courtroom drama “Silk.”
“Last Tango” wrapped its first season in the U.K. in late 2012. It stars Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid as childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia, both widowed and in their 70s. They are reunited over the internet after nearly 60 years and fall in love all over again.
“As their lives collide for a second time, the couple laments what might have been as they take audiences on a life-affirming journey together. While their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age, it is also a story about family and the complications the relationship causes, especially for their grown daughters,” says PBS in a release.
PBS has also announced that “Call the Midwife” will return for its third season in 2014.
