No one denies that the Disney Channel takes kids and makes them into stars. But that doesn’t always work out so well for the kids. Dylan Sprouse — a star of the hit shows “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” and “The Suite Life on Deck” — has now said that he and his twin brother, Cole, left Disney after the channel tried to steal their idea for a spin-off.
From 2005 to 2008 and 2008 to 2010, the Sprouse twins were the stars of two of Disney’s biggest hit shows. They were well paid too, making more than any other Disney stars except Selena Gomez.
And then they just walked away.
Why would the two young actors leave behind the money and fame so suddenly? First of all, the main reason was definitely college — unlike most Disney kids, the Sprouse boys actually wanted an education. There was, however, another big reason why the twins were done with Disney: The network wouldn’t let them be producers on a spin-off series that the Sprouses came up with.
According to Dylan Sprouse in an interview posted on YouTube, he and Cole had come up with a full spin-off series that would keep the show going even in their absence. They would return to Boston, initially to live with their mother, back in the hotel. A young kid would then move into the hotel with his single dad, and the twins would teach him their ways. After that, Zack would get a job selling cars and Cody would leave for college.
Disney said no. “When we had pitched our idea, it was kind of this situation where they had almost laughed in our faces,” Dylan explains in the video.
Disney was not done with the Sprouse twins yet though. One year later, someone from the channel met with the two to see if they would be interested in a “brand-new” spin-off idea. The Disney plan had the twins moving to Miami, where they would live in a hotel with Selena Gomez. Then, a kid with a single dad would move in and learn the hotel ways of Zack and Cody. After awhile, Zack would get a job selling cars, and Cody would leave for college.
Needless to say, the Sprouses weren’t too interested. “They pitched us our idea — in Miami, with Selena Gomez,” Dylan says. “And Cole and I turned to each other and we basically laughed in their faces and walked out. And that was the last meeting we had with Disney.”
It may have been a good choice.
