Out of all of FOX’s new shows premiering this fall, only “Dads” falls into the category of the multi-camera sitcom. Starring Seth Green (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Robot Chicken”) and Giovanni Ribisi (“My Name Is Earl”), the show follows two thirty-something guys whose fathers make life far more difficult than is strictly necessary.
The dads, played by Martin Mull and Peter Riegert, are pretty much everyone’s nightmare of a middle-aged parent. And they’re pretty well matched in their awfulness. Created by Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy,” “Ted”), Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild.
This isn’t exactly the most promising preview trailer that FOX has released. Many of the jokes fall kind of flat — do we really need a bunch of Asian schoolgirl jokes in this day and age? On the other hand, there’s a lot of comedic talent available if better jokes show up. The scene in which the two dads mutually refuse to pay their dinner bill, for example, is pretty brilliant.
Can FOX make a lone multi-camera sitcom work in a sea of single-camera comedies? “Dads” does seem to be the network’s experiment in this direction.
