After deliberating for three days, an Arizona jury has found Jodi Arias guilty of the first-degree murder of Travis Alexander. Initially Arias said she wasn’t involved in the killing whatsoever, then claimed intruders carried out the crime. Finally, she changed her story once more, saying she killed Alexander in self-defense.
The two carried on an affair that was kept secret due to Alexander’s standing as an elder in the Mormon church. The defense claimed that Alexander was a liar who cheated on Arias and was cruel to her. Travis was killed while taking a shower on June 4, 2008. He was shot in the head, stabbed dozens of times and had his throat cut.
As Arias was convicted of first-degree murder, the penalty phase of the trial, which will begin May 9, will be used to determine if she is eligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors will have the opportunity to present additional evidence before the jurors decide whether the crime was committed in a cruel manner.
